How to keep track of your money…LITERALLY!
![]()
I was driving back from my Ph.D. classes on Sunday and stopped at Subway for lunch. I paid the women behind the counter and she gave me about $3 in change. One of the dollar bills had written across the bottom, “Pls. Track me @ www.wheresgeorge.com. Thanks!”
I was intrigued so when I got home I decided to pull up the site. Thinking this might be some sort of practical joke, I made sure my Avast! Anti-virus and spyware detector, SpyWare Doctor, were both updated and running. Luckily, the site was safe…and very, very cool.
Essentially, this site is a way to track currency as it traverses the economy. I registered for a free account and entered the dollar bill’s series and serial number. There was only one other registered “wheresgeorge” user who had the bill before me. However, I can now track this dollar as it makes its way through our commerce system. Of course this assumes others who get the bill also register for a wheresgeorge.com account and claim that they have the bill.
If this idea takes off, it is an interesting way to see how money navigates our economy. I’m going out of town this week and will likely use this dollar at my destination. I’m hoping the next person tracks the bill. Knowing me, it will be used at Starbucks
What does this have to do with personal development or business success? Nothing really. I just thought it was a great website and concept to share. Though I guess you could say that this concept proves how small the world really is once track your dollar all the way to Tokyo. Then you’ll realize how connect we all really are.

Seeing as I’ve been using WheresGeorge for about ten years, I’d say it has already taken off. Just because you “discovered” something, doesn’t make it new.
Derek,
Thanks for the post. WOW! I had no idea its been around that long. I guess the idea has taken off, I guess I’ve been living under a rock
I’m curious, which one of your dollar bills has taken the craziest ride around the world?
